Calcium and Vitamin D Found to Quickly Strengthen Bones

milk

Researchers recently set out to show that by consuming calcium and vitamin D, bones could be quickly strengthened.

5,000 new Female Navy recruits were selected to participate in the study. They were chosen because they all had a lower than average calcium intake, with the participants consuming an average of 300 milligrams of calcium everyday.

Half of the recruits were given 800IU of Vitamin D and 2,000 milligrams of calcium. The other half were given a placebo.

At the end of basic training, about 165 of the recruits taking the placebos experience a stress fracture, while only 132 of the recruits taking Vitamin D and Calcium experienced fractures.

While this might not seem like much, this difference could conceivably prevent almost 90 fractures a year among female Navy recruits.
