Wonderful Water Weekend

Staying active is something that is an integral part of maintaining a positive mental state. This is true of all people old and young, but it especially true of someone who is mobility challenged. Wheelchair sports have been popular from many years. This includes things like wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, and wheelchair cycling. There are many sports that a mobility challenged person can take part in and many find that water sports can be a lot of fun.

One of the most popular water sports is water skiing and there is one organization that has been helping people who are mobility challenged learn how to ski for over ten years.

The Adaptive Adventure Sports Coalition (TAASC) is a not for profit organization that was founded in 1997. They were established to help improve the lives of those who are mobility challenged, which they achieve by providing access to may recreational sports and activities. They organize events, including cycling, alpine skiing, sailing, ice skating, and kayaking throughout the year.

A few months ago, TAASC held their eleventh annual water sports weekend. The water sports weekend includes a lot more than just water skiing and wake boarding, although that is a big part of it. The event is designed to be a fun way to introduce therapeutic water sports to mobility challenged individuals, many who have never done any water skiing before.

This year was very special, because they were joined by the Wounded Warriors. The Wounded Warriors is a group that assists disabled veterans and increases social awareness about the needs of the mobility challenged.

The Wounded Warriors made a dramatic entrance in an Army Helicopter, which brought veterans from as far as Washington DC. In all more than 40 people were able to experience the joys of water sports and there were more than fifty volunteers, who helped cook food and otherwise contribute to the success of the event.
